TORONTO — Audrey Williams, the first wife of legendary country singer Hank Williams, was a notoriously bad singer. And the fact that everyone kind of knew it — even her husband — is one of the subplots in the new biopic I Saw the Light, one of the standout flicks at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Elizabeth Olsen stars as Audrey in the film, so when she sings as the character — opposite Tom Hiddleston’s Hank the First — the actress told us she made she sure to be off-key as needed:
“Some people may like my voice and some people may not. We did try and make her sound more flat and harsh-sounding when she’s singing on the radio. But when she sings around the house, it’s just what it is, which is different than a performance.”
Olsen’s right — actually both she and Hiddleston sound angelic quietly harmonizing in one scene on a duet of I Saw the Light as Hank holds their newborn baby. It’ll jerk some tears, trust us.
